The stalks

A mouthpiece's shaft, referred to as the stem, affects a mouthpiece's playability by a percentage equal to its length proportion.

The musician is seldom aware of the importance of this part. A mouthpiece is traditionally assessed according to cup depth and rim width, but a look through the bore gives you at most information about the degree of contamination. The shape of the stem bore can hardly be determined with conventional methods. This hole runs too narrow and long to be able to look at it. How important this part of the mouthpiece really is, could only be recognized by the introduction of the screw stems.

The mouthpiece works like a nozzle, the shape of which determines the strength and speed of the air compression in the instrument and the resulting standing wave. Every musician can now choose their optimal sound system with little effort. When choosing the right stem, he should be guided by the ease of tone formation and the desired timbre. Often it will not be possible to realize all ideas in one mouthpiece . However, thanks to the changing system, a satisfactory result can be found in almost all circumstances.

The volume of the stalk decreases as the number increases. That is, the number 1 is a bulbous, wide-bored stalk, whereas the number 8 is narrow and slender. Large stems give a full, big tone, are often sluggish and difficult to play in the high notes. Narrow stems are bright and sharp. The stems marked with letters are new developments and should condense and expand the properties of the number stems.
